Michael Winner, Director - "Death Wish", "The Mechanic" 1935-2013

El cineasta británico y crítico gastronómico Michael Winner, director de las cintas "Death Wish", ha muerto. Tenía 77 años.

La esposa de Winner, Geraldine, dijo que murió el lunes en su casa en Londres tras padecer una enfermedad.

De entre las 30 películas de Winner, unas de las más destacadas fueron las tres cintas de acción "Death Wish" ("El vengador anónimo") protagonizadas por el fallecido Charles Bronson.

Winner nació en Londres en 1935 y trabajó con astros de Hollywood incluyendo Marlon Brando, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum y Faye Dunaway, aunque muchas de sus películas fueron hechas con artistas casi desconocidos

Una de sus primeras cintas fue el largometraje sobre desnudismo "Some Like It Cool" de 1962; después se especializó en películas de suspenso y acción incluyendo "The Mechanic" y "Scorpio".

Winner nunca se tomó las críticas a sus películas demasiado en serio.

"Si quieren arte no se preocupen por las películas", dijo alguna vez. "Compren un Picasso".

Tuvo una segunda carrera como crítico de restaurantes y escribía la columna "Winners Dinners" en el diario Sunday Times. Sus duras críticas lo llevaron a ser vetado en algunos restaurantes y su mayor elogio calificar una comida de "histórica".

En los últimos años se volvió famoso por una serie de anuncios comerciales para una aseguradora, con la frase "Por favor, ¡cálmate querida!" que el primer ministro David Cameron usó alguna vez para referirse a una legisladora causando escándalo en el Parlamento.

También fundó y ayudó a financiar una campaña para crear un monumento a los policías de Londres muertos en el cumplimiento de su deber.

Winner había tenido problemas de salud desde que tuvo una infección bacteriana por comer ostras pasadas en 2007.

Escribió su última columna en diciembre, pero se negó a despedirse.

"¿Quién sabe, quizá regrese después de Navidad" escribió. "¿Cuántas veces hizo lo mismo Sinatra?"

Su esposa, quien se casó con Winner hace dos años, dijo que era "un hombre maravilloso, brillante, divertido y generoso. Se fue la luz de mi vida".
